Patient portal for a clinic chain: booking, lab results, video visits

A chain of 18 clinics takes bookings by phone. The call center is overloaded, lab results are handed out on paper and consultations happen over messengers.

Studio concept project: how we would solve this task. Not a client engagement — brand names are fictional.

Solution

A portal and PWA: booking with doctor and time selection, lab results with clear explanations, in-browser video visits and payment that accounts for health insurance.

Before

Booking only by phone during business hours, results on paper, medical history scattered across clinics.

Key decisions

Three decisions behind the result

01

Real-time schedule

Slots come from the clinic EMR and are held for 5 minutes on selection — no double bookings.

02

Lab results explained

Values are shown on a “normal — high — low” scale with an explanation, not as a raw lab table.

03

Video visits without apps

Video calls run in the browser; the doctor sees the patient record in the next window.

After

Soft colors, large elements and plain language — an interface that works for people aged 25 and 70 alike.

Outcome

Patients handle routine tasks themselves; the call center focuses on complex cases.

Technology

AI and people

Who did what

What AI did

Draft lab-result explanations for doctors, request routing, appointment reminders.

What people did

Medical wording and its review, EMR integration, personal data protection, accessibility.
